The Microwave: Your Kitchen’s Secret Weapon

Tuesday, May 15, 2018

While I personally am not a huge fan of my microwave, and honestly could live my entire life without it, I received this contributor post today! This post is full of many uses for your microwave! Check them out!

As a cooking device, the microwave has not been treated fairly. It’s more than something you can use to heat up leftovers, but can be used to cook entire meals, crisp up meat, and even give your cup of coffee a milky froth. So let’s have a look at some of the best speedy meals that only require the microwave.

Risotto
The one thing that is an absolute pain about making a risotto from scratch is that you have to stir the thing constantly- not anymore! Instead, you can make your own perfect risotto dish with all the ingredients you want, but beware of cooking meat in with this dish. It’s much better to use risotto as a vegetarian main. The basics include putting the rice into a bowl, with stock and liquid of choice, such as wine, and microwave on high for 10 minutes. Stir it once, then put it in for 3 minutes, then start again and do it for 7. Hey presto! Of course, it’s important to have a microwave that can cope with these demands; it’s worth having a look at the Best Convection Microwave Oven in 2018 guide to give you some handy pointers, especially if you’ve got an old microwave that’s about to expire.

Jacket Potato
A lot of people use the microwave to bake a potato and then finish it off in the oven, but it’s time to make a change. Sweet potatoes make great jackets, and you can make it a vegan meal by adding chickpeas. All you have to do is put the sweet potatoes on a microwavable plate, and cook them on high for 18 to 20 minutes, then split the potato in half and add the filling of your choice. You might go for the standard tuna, or if you’re looking to go full vegan, you can add various pulses, but make sure they are rinsed properly. The great thing about a jacket potato is that it’s warmth and comfort in a simple dish.

Lemon Pudding
While these meals may sound simple enough to make and are savory, we can’t not have a sweet dish. You might have heard about mug cakes which are all the rage now, and this is very similar. And sugar, flour, eggs, lemon zest, butter, and vanilla into a mix, and when it’s creamy, spoon it into a microwave proof baking dish and heat on high for 3 minutes. Turn halfway through cooking, and check to see that it’s cooked all the way through. Heat some lemon curd in the microwave for 30 seconds and pour over the pudding.

This is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to making fantastic meals in the microwave. You could poach fish, make jambalaya, or create your favorite rice pudding in less than 20 minutes. As far as the microwave is concerned, it’s the secret weapon in your kitchen. It makes life quick and easy, and there are so many different dishes you can make, that you could seriously debate whether you will need your oven ever again! And of course, don’t forget, any of those wonderful meals could be reheated.
