Finding new, fun ways to bond with the kids is a great way to spend time. With your kids at school and you busy working, you can easily get completely wiped out and exhausted! In my house, this usually results in us all just laying around watching TV together. If you have the energy, though, taking the time to do a little bonding over a fun activity will do you a world of good. Here are some fun bonding ideas for you and the kids that you’ll both love:

Reading Together

Reading together is one of the best activities you can choose to do with your kids. As a reading teacher, I truly believe that there’s no better experience that reading with your kids from the time their in the womb! Introducing kids to reading from a young age allows them to build up skills in various areas, from their language to listening. By practicing reading with you at home, you should find that your child’s confidence improves and that they begin to do better at school, too. Fostering a love of reading from a young age will give them a fantastic hobby for life.

Arts And Crafts

Arts and crafts are a lot of fun! The door is pretty wide open when it comes to creating beautiful art with kiddos!  The fact is, you can do whatever you like when it comes to arts and crafts. You can paint with your fingers, make a rocket out of used bottles, make jewelry for one another, and a plethora of other things. Why not set a challenge for yourselves each week, and try to make something new every time? You can buy arts and crafts kits that are already put together for you, or you can build one of your own with things like clay, painting materials, different fabrics, and so on. When it comes to supplies, remember–one man’s trash is another man’s treasure! You can find “stuff” in the most unusual of places if you look with a creative eye.  Check out YouTube and Pinterest for different arts and crafts ideas!

Cooking and Baking

Cooking and baking aren’t just a great past times -they also teach your kids valuable life skills that they can use as they get older, too. Sites like Your Bread Machine can help you to bake your own fresh bread at home, but you can find many recipes on other sites too.  Whether you want to make a quick snack or a full meal, there are tons of options that are kid friendly! Did I mention that cooking offers fantastic practice in building math skills? Things like measuring, counting, and even fractions are part of almost all recipes! You can enjoy the time together, and enjoy the finished product as well!

Eat Dinner Together

Eating dinner together sometimes seems impossible to busy families like mine! With sports, homework, work projects, and life in general; sitting down for a family dinner can be tough. But if you can make time at least once or twice a week, it’s so worth it! Simply enjoying a meal together is scientifically proven to be one of the best things a family can do to feel closer together. It doesn’t have to be dinner specifically–any meal together is great! Make this a goal for your family, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much closer it makes you!

Do Some Gardening

Spring is taking its sweet time arriving in Ohio this year, but I’m confident it is right around the corner. April snow storms showers bring May flower, right? Speaking of flowers, gardening is another great skill for kids to have! Plus,  it’s a therapeutic way to bond for both of you. You can plant flowers, water the plants, pick weeds, create a fairy garden and even build your very own vegetable garden to harvest!

Volunteer

Volunteering possibilities are endless! Check your local area for opportunities such as animal shelters, homeless shelters, churches, food banks, soup kitchens, or litter pick up.  Volunteering is a great way to feel closer to those you love by taking part in more meaningful activities together. You’re not only building your bond, but also helping others in need! Helping kids to see the value of helping others is so important in today’s world!

This is just a short list of ideas to help strengthen that bond between you and your children. There are many other ways to enjoy quality family time! Really, no matter what you do together helps build a bond and memories that will stick with them forever.
